Build a Rack That Holds 12, 27 Gallon Storage Totes
Tired of digging through stacks of storage totes just to find one bin? In this DIY project, I'll show you how to build an 8-foot-tall storage rack that holds 12 large storage totes in two easy-access columns. Each bin slides in and out independently, so you can grab exactly what you need without lifting or moving a stack of heavy bins.
This storage rack is the perfect solution for organizing your garage, workshop, basement, or shed while maximizing every square foot of floor space. By storing totes vertically, you'll reclaim valuable room, reduce clutter, and create a clean, organized storage system that can hold hundreds of pounds of seasonal decorations, tools, camping gear, sports equipment, holiday decorations, and much more.
Whether you're a beginner or experienced woodworker, this straightforward build is a great weekend project that delivers years of practical storage. If you've been looking for an efficient way to organize your home or workshop, this DIY tote storage rack is one of the best upgrades you can make.
Benefits of Using A Storage Rack
- Instant access to every tote – Each bin slides in and out independently, so you never have to unstack heavy totes just to reach one at the bottom.
- Maximizes vertical space – Instead of spreading bins across the floor, you take advantage of the full height of your garage or workshop, freeing up valuable floor space.
- Stores an incredible amount of gear – Twelve 27-gallon totes provide 324 gallons of organized storage, enough for tools, camping gear, holiday decorations, sports equipment, seasonal clothing, automotive supplies, and more.
- Keeps everything organized – Assign each tote a purpose and label it, making it easy to find exactly what you need in seconds.
- Reduces clutter – Getting loose items off shelves and into labeled totes creates a cleaner, more functional garage or workshop.
- Protects your belongings – Plastic totes help keep contents protected from dust, moisture, pests, and accidental damage.
- Makes seasonal storage simple – Swap out Christmas decorations, Halloween décor, gardening supplies, or summer gear without digging through multiple containers.
- Safer than stacking totes – Tall stacks of bins can become unstable. A dedicated rack keeps every tote securely supported and easy to access.

*Note, I recommend to purchase the storage bins online and picking them up at the store, either in the store at customer service or they can be loaded into your car curbside. The bins don't fit in the carts and carrying 12 of these through the store is cumbersome…click the link above to go directly to the exact bins needed.
