Building DIY Tapered Cedar Planters

I’ve been wanting to build some new modern looking DIY tapered cedar planters for the house especially after realizing how expensive planters are to purchase these days.  I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel and design anything so I figured my first stop would be Pinterest to see what others have already built and had made plans available.  That turned out to be a disappointing waste of time as the plans I saw were exactly why DIY gets a bad name.  That’s how this project was born and includes a full set of detailed digital plans and a full build video to follow along as you build.

Hear me out…I am not a name brand luxury snob when it comes to buying anything.  In fact some of the best tools and electronics I own are nameless Amazon products.  To build tapered planters, angles are involved.  If you don’t use angles and just cut cedar fence pickets and nail them together, you’re going to get a poor end product.  Most plans I saw were just that.  Maybe the authors’ audience are beginners that have no tools or understanding of building a quality product, they just want a product…and that’s fine, but that’s not fine for me who is trying to change the way DIY is looked at as not low end crappy products.

In this video we’re not using fancy dovetail or mortise and tenon joints nor are we using high end wood and finishes, we’re focusing on building a nice, higher than average quality planter that may require some tools and basic understanding of angles.  If you don’t have the basic understanding yet, this video will fill the gap so you can build these planters and know that when they’re done they will not fall apart after a single season and will not look all wonky sitting on mismatched cuts and joints because bevel angles weren’t used in the construction.

Enjoy the video, check out the detailed build plans linked below, and please support my YouTube channel by liking the video and subscribing to my channel.  Thanks for taking the time to check out my site and tapered cedar page!
